About The American Legion

The American Legion is the nation’s largest and most influential veterans service organization, founded in 1919 by World War I veterans. Today, it includes millions of members across the United States and around the world. Our mission is to serve veterans, their families, and our communities while promoting the ideals of freedom and democracy.

Everything The American Legion does is built on four core pillars:

  • Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation – Ensuring that those who served our country receive the care, benefits, and support they have earned.
  • National Security – Supporting a strong and prepared military, advocating for policies that keep America safe, and assisting service members and their families.
  • Americanism – Promoting respect for the U.S. Constitution, patriotism, and civic responsibility through programs like Boys & Girls State, flag education, and public ceremonies.
  • Children & Youth – Strengthening the next generation by mentoring young people, offering scholarships, and supporting families in need.

Through these pillars, The American Legion works in thousands of communities to honor service, support veterans, and inspire future leaders.
